Producer, Director, Animator born in Oakland, California, raised in Watsonville, earned his Fine Arts degree in Life Drawing with a minor in Art History, from the University of Hawaii in the Winter of 1971. His first job interview was at Walt Disney Productions. He submitted his drawing portfolio and was hired into their training program three days later.
Gary’s animation career began in February,1972, on the animated motion picture Robin Hood. His first assignment was as a ruff inbetweener to Supervising Animator Frank Thomas, and over his career has worked in many categories of traditional animation.
His career continued as an Animator on Winnie the Pooh and Tigger Too (1974) and The Rescuers (1976); Directing Animator on Pete’s Dragon (1977) and The Small One (1978). He shared public recognition with his artistic partners when he resigned his position, along with Don Bluth and John Pomeroy from Walt Disney Productions in 1979 and co-founded Don Bluth Productions. Since that time, he has animated, produced, co-directed and supervised post-production on 12 films and four video games, including, The Secret of NIMH (1982); An American Tail (1986); The Land Before Time (1988); All Dogs Go To Heaven (1989); Thumbelina (1994); Anastasia (1997); Bartok the Magnificent (1999) and Titan AE (2000) plus, video games Dragon’s Lair (1983); Space Ace (1983); Dragon’s Lair II: A Time Warp (1989), and Dragon’s Lair 3D: Return to the Lair (2002).
Mr. Goldman continues to work with Don Bluth under the Don Bluth Films banner. They have been developing intellectual properties for animated feature films, consulting on video game productions and giving seminars on animation production to animation professionals and students from around the world, in venues from Savannah Georgia to Los Angels, to Mexico City. Mr. Goldman has been a member of The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences since 1976. He and his wife Cathy reside in Phoenix, Arizona. They have five grown children and currently, seven grand-children.
